WARS, MEMORY AND NATIONHOOD IN SPANISH AMERICA: THE PARAGUAYAN WAR (1864-1870) AND THE WAR OF THE PACIFIC (1879-1883)

In the last two decades, the study of war has undergone a substantial renewal. The field of war and society studies has shifted from conventional military and diplomatic studies of conflicts to social and cultural impact, as in the construction of collective identities. The mobilization of society, the systematic socialization of the nationalist discourses, the establishment of frontiers in the communities in dispute through processes of ethnic differentiation and the sedimentation of collective memories are aspects of the problem.
This dossier is part of this debate and seeks to bring together research on the impact of wars on the formation of nations in the second half of the nineteenth century, based on the two most important conflicts in South America: The Paraguayan War (1864-1870) and the War of the Pacific (1879-1883). These conflicts involved extensive social mobilization to fill out the military cadre as well as the active participation of civil society in sustaining the war effort and fostering narratives denigrating the adversary and celebrating national identity. These wars, which gave rise to nationalist imaginaries that impacted on the political dynamics, were prolonged over time through commemorative practices, sites of memory and multiple manifestations in the fields of literature, education, the press, combatant testimony, historiography, visual culture, etc.

- War and public opinion: representations of the enemy, self-perception of the nation, journalism and war propaganda
- War and the politics of memory: civic rites, commemorations, wars in schools, monuments, museums, etc.
- War and literary representations: novels, testimonial literature, theatre, historiography.
- War and politics of heroification: collective heroes, popular heroes, female heroism, official heroes, civic relics, etc.
