Abstract

Contemporary democracy coexists with capitalism in its financialized and deregulated mode produces high levels of inequality, which are attenuated to a greater or lesser extent by the redistributive capabilities of a modern welfare State. The article discusses the fundaments of this redistribution from the point of view of theories of justice and approaches to radical egalitarianism, liberalism and liberal egalitarianism and it links the extension of a welfare State to a social ecological State given the environmental challenges and the unavoidable action of a government against climate change.
