Strategies of Desexilio: the Trace of the Objects in the Construction of a Common Story

Abstract

This article analyzes two works that address exilic experiences: Fragmentos de un diario inacabado (1983), a documentary by Chilean filmmaker Angelina Vázquez; and De un país sin nombre (2016), an art exhibition by Chilean artist and illustrator Francisca Yáñez. The analysis focuses on the relevance of some objects in the narrative construction, where also other voices and experiences are fundamental to create the discourse. First of all, the text reviews narrative strategies developed by Vázquez in her first person documentary, that is constructed in plural. Then, the article examines some paratextual materials that dialogue with the intradiegetic universe of the film. Finally, Yañez’ exhibition is used as a reading key that allows the text to articulate its perspective through concepts such as archive, subjective experience and community.
