This article deals with the gastrogifts in the private life of Bernardo O’Higgins during his exile in Peru (1823-1842), exploring how sweet gifts operated as vehicles of affection, gratitude and sociability in the intimate sphere of the hero. Based on the critical analysis of his epistolary, 29 culinary exchanges, mainly sweets, sent or received by O’Higgins and his sister Rosa Riquelme are identified. It is argued that these presents, far from being trivial acts, reveal a complex symbolic network that inscribes O’Higgins in the logic of the gift: a relational system loaded with meaning, where the gift reinforces bonds, expresses emotions and sustains reciprocity. The article proposes an alternative reading of O’Higgins’ ostracism, from the everyday sensibility. The gastrogifts allow us to understand a little explored dimension of the character: the domestic man, sybarite and affectionate, who cultivated human bonds through the generous gesture of giving flavors.
