The Impact of Food Consumption, Agricultural Production, and Food Imports on Food Security in ASEAN-6

Abstract

Food security is a complex issue influenced by the availability, access, and utilization of food. This study examines the impact of food consumption, agricultural production, and food imports on food security in ASEAN-6 countries from 2000 to 2021. Data from Faostat, the World Bank, and World in Data were analyzed using panel data regression with the Fixed Effect Model. The results show that food consumption negatively impacts food security due to unbalanced consumption patterns and pressure on natural resources. Countries like Thailand and Malaysia, with rising food consumption, face increased vulnerability to global price fluctuations and supply chain disruptions. On the other hand, agricultural production positively impacts food security by improving supply stability. Technological advancements such as precision farming and drought-resistant crops have enhanced productivity and reduced environmental pressure. Food imports also play a significant role in ensuring food availability, particularly for countries with production deficits. However, over-reliance on imports poses risks due to external market volatility. The findings highlight the need for policies that promote balanced food consumption, innovation in agricultural practices, and diversified food sources to achieve long-term food security in the ASEAN region.
