Effective Altruism: towards a conceptualization of neo-charity

The Effective Altruism appeared as a current of thought towards the end of the twentieth century, projecting itself with great force during the first decades of the twenty-first century. Conceived by sociologists, philosophers and businessmen, it has revitalized altruism in the context of capitalism, making donations and aid to the most destitute, one more action to increase the dynamics of national and global markets. Once again, the interests of a few involve the most vulnerable sectors of the planet, to account for market objectives directly related to their economic patrimony. In this paper, we will identify the fundamental semantic nuclei of the ideological discourse on which Effective Altruism is based, providing, through its analysis, the essential qualities of this discourse. To approach this object of study, we will resort to the categories of semiotic analysis. Finally, we propose that this new form of altruism corresponds to the expression of a neo-charity, which rescues the sense of the basic help of the concept of altruism, to put it in the context of the free market as one more instrument for the enrichment of the great financial conglomerates of the world.
