Abstract

Rural tourism contributes to improving the social and productive inclusion of the local population; however, in practice, products and services often resemble mass tourism in their characteristics, a situation that may not contribute to achieving the claimed benefits. The objective of this research was to identify the contribution to the social and productive inclusion of the local population through the development of rural tourism activities in Villa de Leyva, in Boyacá, Colombia. A quantitative approach was used, employing descriptive and multivariate statistics (multiple correspondence analysis and cluster analysis). The results show that rural tourism, developed in the region, is a development alternative for some stakeholders in rural communities; however, its reach and coverage in terms of social inclusion are still limited. It is necessary to generate synergies between local communities, public institutions, private stakeholders, and academia so that this type of tourism can effectively contribute to improving the well-being of the rural population.
