Abstract

The Torrontes Riojano has become an emblematic variety of the wine sector in the province of La Rioja, Argentina, both because of its productive relevance and its cultural roots. The Torrontes Riojano constitutes the only autochthonous variety of Argentina is worldwide recognized as an emblem of Argentine white wine. However, the strain faces a multiplicity of challenges given by the national and international context, while there is not enough literature that records and analyzes its socio-productive development for the province of La Rioja. In this context, the purpose of this work is to review and analyze the emergence and trajectory of the Torrontes Riojano strain, addressing its main productive and entrepreneurial features and trends of production for the province of La Rioja. In doing so, we work with documentary information, historical sources, and national statistics. Finally, some future challenges are introduced.
